Why
volunteer? Why help?
The fire service is one of the most diverse and challenging
fields today. It is this diversity that attracts most men
and women to join our ranks. Different people volunteer for
different reasons. Action oriented people enjoy the
excitement and adrenaline rush that emergency services has
to offer. Some see the volunteer fire service as an
alternative to driving a desk by day by allowing them to
drive a fire truck at night!
Many like the feeling they get when they help people in
their time of need and some feel it's their obligation to
serve the community. Yet others just want to belong to the
team. Whatever motivates you to volunteer - everyone gains
the self-satisfaction of being at their best when others are
dealing with some of the worst that life has to offer.

The
Big Problem
The Volunteer fire company dates
back to the time of Benjamin Franklin. Today it is slowly
disappearing, going the way of the horse-drawn pumper. The
decline in available volunteers has been attributed to
Societies Changes; longer commutes, two-income households,
year-round youth sports. You could also attribute it to new folks in town
who don't even know the department is volunteer. Or it could
be due to stricter training requirements and fewer big fires.
There is no greater, longer-running expression of
volunteerism in U.S. history than that of the volunteer fire
service. It still saves taxpayers billions of dollars each
year. Almost three quarters of the nation's 1.1. Million
firefighters are volunteers and two-thirds of all fire
departments are volunteer. Your community needs
you today!
