Knockdown on Ringwood Rd.
On Sunday November 11th at 10:08PM Dryden Fire Department was
dispatched for a reported garage fire on the 300 block of
Ringwood Rd. Automatic mutual aide tankers out of Freeville &
Varna were dispatched with Dryden first alarm.
Assistant Chief 564 Mark Bell checked enroute, requested an
additional tanker out of Etna.
Engine 501 checked enroute four minutes in with a full
compliment of interior firefighters
driven by FF. Adam Talbot with a crew of (Capt 582 Greg
Cotterill, Capt 585 Ken Vorstadt,
FF. Frank Palmer, FF. Bruce Eck, and FF. Will Hine).
Captain 584 Rick Young who was close by the scene during the
initial call, arrived and
confirmed a working garage fire with it progressing into the
house. Assistant Chief Bell
arrived and assumed command of the scene. The attached garage
turned out to be part of the
first floor of the structure with the second floor extending
over the garage. A pickup truck was parked in front of the
garage and was also fully involved.
Tanker 521 punched enroute driven by FF. Tim Arnold with a crew of
(FF. Jim
Drew), followed closely by Ladder 531
driven by FF. Doug Cotterill, with a crew of (Assistant Chief 563
Dave Cotterill and FF. George Wildridge). Engine 701 out of
Freeville headed up to setup a tanker fill site
and provide additional interior personnel. Additional manpower
was requested out of Varna. Chief 561 arrived, did a quick walk
around the structure, and took charge of operations.
Dryden
Engine 501 arrived on scene at 10:18PM, pulling into the
driveway. Two attack crews
were formed from the engine's crew.
The first interior crew made up of FF. Will Hine and FF. Bruce
Eck pulled a 1 3/4 inch line, successfully
knocking down the vehicle fire. They made entry into the
first floor of the structure,
attempting to push the fire back into the garage from the house.
The 2 1/2 inch blitz line was pulled by
Capt Ken Vorstadt and FF. Frank Palmer and they began to fight
the fire from outside of the garage., then followed the other
crew inside.
Tanker 521 pulled up behind Engine 501 and dropped both it's
ponds on the road. 521 Dropped its
load of water and proceeded to the hydrant on the upper end of
Mineah Rd. Ladder 531 arrived staging down
the road and it's manpower pulled another handline off the
engine and made entry on the second floor. Engine 701 out
of Freeville arrived and provided
her manpower, dropped a third pond and dumped her water. Engine
701 then relocating to the Mineah Rd hydrant to fill tankers.
Interior crews were able to make a great knockdown of the fire
and they began to check and overhaul the structure. By this time
adequate water supply had been established behind behind Engine
501 for all crews. Freeville's Tanker 721 and Etnas Tanker 321 arrived and dumped their loads of water.
Varna arrived providing more manpower support on the fire
grounds.
Ladder 531 later returned and Rescue 541 was brought up just after
11:00PM by FF. Doug Cotterill to
provide support and fill air bottles off the cascade system.
Cortlandville Fire Department back filled Dryden station with an
engine and manpower.
Assistant Chief 565 Mike Hall assisted with backfilling units at
Dryden Station.
All Dryden units cleared the scene and were back in service by
12:47AM Monday morning.
Dryden's New Engines Arrive
November 1, 2010 - On
October 10th the Dryden Fire Department was able to show off its
new Engine 502 in
time for our annual open house. Both Engines 501 & 502 were
officially received on October15th with 502 going straight into
service. These 2010 KME Predator custom pumpers
will serve as the first due apparatus to most of Dryden's
alarms.
The last remaining of the two old engines, Engine 501 (1992 Spartan
Gladiator-Saulsbury) was sold to the Goodyear Hose Company Inc.
in Galeton PA. There the truck will replace a 1970's unit and
serve as there water supply truck.
At our Open
House this year Dryden hosted a representation from all the town
of Dryden fire departments (Etna, Freeville, McLean and Varna).
Kids of all ages were able to ride high in our ladder truck
bucket, spray water from a fire hose, crawl through a smoke
house, and a smoke filled school bus. Sparky the fire dog made
an appearance and the Cooking and Kitchen crews did a phenomenal
job again this year. Ithaca Police, State Police, Sheriffs
Department, and Dryden Police all participated with various
activities and displays. Guthrie Helicopter landed at 12:25PM
and gave the public a close-up look into a working Helicopter.
The main event, a live burn set to demonstrate the power of fire
and how fire sprinklers can protect, was touched off at 1:00PM.
The event (see video below) ran very smoothly and the public
learned a lot about the disastrous power that fire can have.
Our department would like to thank all the county agencies and
personnel who helped make this years open house a success. Also,
an especially big thank you to the members of Dryden fires Public
Education Committee on the planning and the execution of this
event.
Fire at
Dryden High School
On October
9th at 9:24PM Tompkins County Dispatch was notified of a fire
alarm at the Dryden Junior/Senior High School.
Dryden Fire
Department was dispatched for a fire alarm at the High
school unknown cause. Dryden
Ambulance was already on-scene staged on the other side of the
school at Friday night's football game. The ambulance
crew drove over and reported smoke coming from the building.
Reports from school staff also started to trickle in
of smoke odor throughout the building.
While enroute
Dryden Assistant Chief 565 Mike Hall issued a second alarm
asking for a full response out of Dryden Station and mutual
aide from Freeville Fire
Department for a full response. Engine 501 checked enroute
at 9:28PM with a crew of (FF. George Wildridge, Captain 585 Ken Vorstadt,
FF. Frank Palmer, FF. Marc Ninivaggi, and FF. Jen Wildridge).
Pulling up
outside Assistant Chief Hall observed heavy smoke out of the boiler
room area. Another call was issued for a FAST Team out
of Cayuga
Heights and one ladder with manpower out of Cortlandville
Main Station.
Quick entry was
made into the building to assess what was going on inside.
Assistant Chief Hall found heavy black smoke pushing from the boiler room
into the school hallways.
Engine 501 arrived on-scene
at 9:30PM and tail boarded the entrance of the middle
school. The engine crews pulled a 2 1/2 inch from the rear
of the truck along with the
high-rise pack and brought them inside. A 5" supply line was
stretched from 501's rear intake to a hydrant nearby.
Dryden Ladder 531 checked enroute at 9:32PM with (FF. Doug
Cotterill and LT. Troy Pudney) followed by Rescue 541 at 9:33
with a crew of (Assistant Chief 564 Mark Bell, FF. Bruce Eck, FF.
Tim Arnold, and FF. Staci Arnold). Deputy Chief
562 Jeff Kirkland arrived on-scene just before Ladder 531.
531 arrived and laddered the building above the boiler
room area, Deputy Chief Kirkland and LT. Pudney made their
way up, checking temperature and roof stability.
The attack crew
made entry into the school and forced the boiler
room door open making a
quick knockdown of the fire. Rescue 541 arrived and provided
lighting and filled empty air bottles.
A third and
fourth alarm was issued for all hands to the High School
from Dryden, Etna, Freeville, McLean, and Varna Fire
Departments. Another
additional call was issued for a FAST Team out of
Cortlandville. Cayuga Heights and Virgil were pulled up to
backfill Dryden Station with an engine each, in addition to
a tanker out of Harford.
Brush 542 (Capt
582 Greg Cotterill, FF. Jim Drew, & FF. Adam Talbot) came up
with manpower at 9:43PM. Additional crews went into the
building to clear the building
of any persons and later to ventilate the smoke.
The fire was out by 9:49PM.
Other personnel on-scene included Safety Officer Dan Hill,
Fire Police Captain Jim Shigley, FF. Alyssa Overbaugh and FF.
Dustin Brunner.
Dryden Units completed from the school at 1:48AM
after an investigation. It was determined that an unknown
malfunction caused a fire in a generator located in the
schools mechanical room.
Over 21 volunteers from Dryden Fire helped squash the fire before it could
spread. This doesn't include the numerous personnel from other
fire departments that aided Dryden that Friday night.
Joint MVA Training in
Freeville
October 1, 2010 - On
September 9th Dryden Fire Department participated in a joint
training exercise with the Freeville Fire Department. The
exercise was to refresh the basic skills of accident victim
extrication.
Two vehicles a small 2 door red car and a white minivan were
setup outside the Freeville station for the training session.
Among the skills revisited in the rain were use of forcible entry tools
to gain access to the vehicle engine, trunk, and passenger cabin
compartments. Firefighters were able to share various techniques
with less experienced firefighters.
In all over twenty-five members from both Freeville and Dryden turned out
to practice in the September rain.
Fire
Prevention Week 2010
October 3rd
kicks off National Fire Prevention Week. This years
campaign is Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With! In 2008
Fire Departments in the United States responded to over 386,500
home fires. Of those fires 2755 people were killed and
over13,160 were injured.
The Dryden Fire Department will be spreading this years message by
visiting 7 Schools that reside in the Town of Dryden through out
the course of the week. We encourage all residents young and old
throughout our town to have working smoke detectors in there
homes.
Here are some facts you should know about smoke detectors:
1.) Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and
injuries. 2.) Smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths. 3.) Heating is the second leading cause of home
fires, fire deaths and fire injuries. 4.) Smoke alarms cut the risk of
dying in a reported fire in half. 5.) In 2003-2006, roughly
two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from home fires in homes
with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
6.) In a 2008 telephone survey, only 12% knew that smoke alarms
should be replaced every 10 years.
7.) No smoke alarms were present in 40% of the home fire deaths.
8.) In fires considered large enough to activate a smoke alarm,
hard-wired alarms operated 91% of the time; battery-powered
smoke alarms operated 75% of the time.
9.) Interconnected smoke alarms on all floors increase safety.
10.) Checkout more safety tips on our smoke alarm
page
US fire departments respond to a home fire every 82seconds.
Help us to help you not become a statistic!
At the conclusion of Fire Prevention Week we will be hosting our
annual Open House on Sunday October 10th. There will be many
activities this year including a live burn demonstration such as
the video clip below.
We hope to see the Dryden community come and visit us on
October10th.

Fire in
the Morning, Fire in the Evening...
April 1, 2010 - After a
quiet month of March, the first day of April brought Neptune
Hose two vehicle fires.
At approximately 9:40AM Dryden was toned out for a report vehicle fire at
the 300 block of Irish Settlement Rd. Assistant Chief 565 Mike
Hall checked enroute and upon arrival confirmed a working car
fire in the engine compartment that was extending into the
passenger compartment. Deputy Chief 569 Jeff Kirkland arrived on
scene in the Duty Chief Vehicle shortly there after.
Engine 501 checked enroute within five minutes (Ed Bell, Assistant Chief
564 Mark Bell, FF Bruce Eck, and FF Frank Palmer). Engine One
was followed out the door by Tanker 521 (FF Doug Cotterill,

February 1, 2010 -
During the month of January the truck committee sat down and heard
proposals from different apparatus manufacturers including
Pierce, Rosenbauer, and KME. Dryden is looking into purchasing
two new custom built pumpers. The truck committee came to the
decision after much discussion that we would be working with KME
Fire Apparatus. The Kovatch family owns KME Fire Apparatus out
of Nesquehoning, PA and has been producing custom made trucks
since 1946.
The truck committee which represents the DFD membership was appointed
late last year and consists of Dave Cotterill, Doug Cotterill,
Bill Harding, Jeff Kirkland, Jeremy Neagle, Adam Talbot, Dan
Tier, Tom Warner, and George Wildridge.

Engine 502 arrived on scene and slid down the driveway. Crews stretched 3
hand lines and 5 inch LDH was pulled up to the roadway. Tanker
521 dropped its ponds and water at the end of the driveway.
Varna Engine 1901 arrived on scene and pulled its lines from the roadway
to help cool the exposures. Varna Tanker 1921 pulled on scene and
hooked up to Engine two's LDH at the top of the driveway and
supplied water to our engine.
Engine 501 (Deputy Chief Jeff Kirkland, Safety Officer 591 Jim Drew,
Safety Officer 590 Dan Hill, and FF. Dan Tier) was requested to setup a tanker fill sight at
the corner of Mineah and Ringwood Rd. Rescue 541 (FF Doug
